What Sells at Garage Sales (And What to Donate Instead)
Not everything in your house is garage sale gold. Some categories fly off the table in the first hour; others sit untouched all day. Knowing the difference helps you decide what to haul out, what to price up, and what to send straight to donation.
The Bestsellers
These categories consistently sell at almost every sale:
- Tools — hand tools, power tools, garden equipment. Buyers hunt for these
- Furniture — solid wood pieces, chairs, small tables, bookshelves
- Baby and kids' gear — clothes, toys, strollers (clean and complete)
- Kitchenware — pots, pans, small appliances that still work
- Sporting goods — bikes, camping gear, fishing equipment, weights
- Working electronics — lamps, speakers, game consoles (plug them in to prove it)
- Holiday decorations, especially in the months leading up to the holiday
What Rarely Sells
Old CRT TVs, dated exercise machines, used mattresses, worn-out shoes, and stained clothing almost never move at any price. Encyclopedias, VHS tapes, and old textbooks are also famous shelf-warmers. Donate or recycle these instead of giving them table space — display real estate is worth more than a 25¢ maybe.
Price the Winners With Confidence
In-demand categories hold their price. Tools and quality furniture can be priced at the top of the usual 10–20%-of-retail range, and buyers will still bite. Slow categories should be priced to move — or bundled ('fill a bag for $3') in the final hours.
Display matters too: put your bestsellers — tools, furniture, bikes — closest to the street. They're the magnets that pull drivers out of their cars, and once shoppers are in your driveway, they browse everything.
