Complete Garage Sale Checklist: Before, During, and After
The difference between a chaotic sale and a profitable one is usually a checklist. Forget the change box or the price stickers and you'll spend sale morning scrambling instead of selling.
Here's the full checklist experienced sellers run through, broken into three phases.
Two Weeks Before the Sale
Big-picture prep happens early:
- Pick a date (Saturday mornings win; check for local community sale weekends)
- Check your city's permit rules
- Sort every room into Keep / Sell / Donate / Trash piles
- Recruit helpers — one person can't run a busy sale alone
- Schedule a donation pickup for the Monday after
The Week Before
Now it gets tactical:
- Price every item with stickers or tape
- Post ads on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Nextdoor
- Make or print directional signs
- Gather tables, racks, blankets, and extension cords
- Get starting cash: a mix of $10s, $5s, $1s, and quarters
Sale Day Morning
Set your alarm early — buyers show up before your posted start time:
- Post signs at every turn by 6:30 AM
- Arrange tables with best items closest to the street
- Set up a checkout station with cash box, bags, and calculator
- Keep valuables and cash on your person, not on a table
During the Sale
Keep the sale moving while protecting your time and money:
- Keep the checkout area visible and use a cash box or waist pack
- Test electronics when practical and answer questions honestly
- Restock tables as items sell so the sale still looks active
- Accept reasonable offers, especially on bulky items or bundles
- Keep an eye on weather, walkways, children, and valuables
Closing, Cleanup, and After the Sale
Decide in advance what happens to unsold items so cleanup does not become another project:
- Mark final-hour discounts clearly instead of negotiating every item
- Bring in cash, remove signs, and check the yard and street for litter
- Separate items for donation, recycling, resale, or storage
- Schedule or complete a donation drop-off while the items are sorted
- Record what sold and which prices worked for your next sale
