12 Garage Sale Tips That Make a Real Difference
The average garage sale makes a few hundred dollars — but well-run sales routinely double that with the same stuff. The gap comes down to a handful of decisions about timing, presentation, and pricing. Here are the tips that matter most.
Before the Sale
Preparation drives profit:
- Pick a Saturday and start early — 7 or 8 AM. Serious buyers come first
- Advertise free on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Nextdoor with photos of your best items
- Price everything ahead of time; unpriced tables lose sales
- Clean items — a wiped-down appliance sells for twice a dusty one
- Get change from the bank: plenty of $1s, $5s, and quarters
Display Like a Store
Presentation raises perceived value:
- Put big-ticket, eye-catching items near the street to pull people in
- Get items off the ground — tables, racks, and shelves outsell tarps
- Hang clothing instead of piling it in boxes
- Group similar things together: kitchen table, kids' corner, tool zone
- Run an extension cord so buyers can test electronics on the spot
During the Sale
Greet everyone, but don't hover. Say yes to reasonable offers — a $4 sale beats an unsold $5 item you'll haul to the donation center. After the mid-morning rush, announce discounts ('everything half price after noon') to keep momentum going.
Keep cash in a fanny pack or apron, never in an unattended box. And have a plan for leftovers before the sale starts: a scheduled donation pickup turns clean-up into a five-minute job.
